The King of England's Navy desperately seeks to reassert its dominance on the high seas in the year 1798. Memories of the previous year's fleet mutinies are fresh in every sea officer's mind as England prepares to defend itself against a massive invasion attempt upon its shores. General Napoleon's "Army of the Coasts of the Ocean" is ramping up construction of shallow draft troop-carrying vessels designed to cross the English Channel and take England by storm. King George III's Navy is all that stands between!
Captain Charles Stirling is a veteran English Post Captain of the fifth-rate frigate Jason. With a sharp mind and predatory nature Stirling is cut from the same cloth as his contemporary Nelson and has gained a reputation as a fighting captain.
On February 6th, 1798, Captain Stirling welcomes twelve-year-old William Wolrige on board the decks of Jason as a first-class volunteer. William is the number four son (of six) belonging to George and Eleanor Wolrige. Much like his older brothers and cousins he is not without his merits. These come to the fore quickly during the action-packed bloody months that follow. The Wolrige family and their Cornish cousins the Wooldridge's are all in during the French Revolutionary and the subsequent Napoleonic Wars fought between 1793 and 1815. This is their story.
